Exclamation 1998 Ford contour not blowing hot or cold air

Hello everyone, I am not sure what is going on with my car. About 2 days ago I was able to use my heater and A/c just fine.. Then one monrning my car did not wanted to start it was stalling and could not get a steady Idling so continue to crank it on and on so it finally did. then I notice now that my heater or A/c do not come on at all. When I turn it to Panel I can hear something moving but nothing blows thru the vents.. I replaced the relay and I check the 30Amp fuse they both look fine please help I am not sure what else to do..

thanks..

John

Re: Hot or cold air not blowing

No Kvn4 I cannot hear the blower turning on at all... I Used to be able to hear and feel the air now I hear nothing but maybe like a vent or something opening behing my dashboard that is all I hear.. Then I hear like air pressure release when I turn it off.. I guess that is normal because it made the air pressure noise even when it was working..

Contours and Mystiques of that era had problems with wiring at the fan speed selector switch and/or at the connector to the resistor. I believe Ford had a Technical Service Bulletin out on this issue. You may want to visit with a Ford tech.

Yes, check with a Ford dealer about the recalls. Some recalls were effective for a specific time or mileage, others may have no restrictions. But it doesn't cost anything to give the dealer your VIN number and let them check on the computer to see what recalls are still active. There were also TSB's (technical service bulletins) for these cars, which addressed some common problems. I have a '99 Mystique myself, so I'm pretty familiar with these cars.

So what next???

Ok everyone I did the following I started the cheap route.. I changed the Blower Resistor wich was $20.00 did not work I also changed the Heater/ Blower Switch did not work, and I changed the Relay did not work, I the took the motor off the panel and I plugged it direct to my big flash light battery and it started to spin... I connect it to the car again and I think I felt it spin but nothing.. I checked for power on the blower cable and my testing light indicated that there was power.. I chec the cables in the resistor and no power going in to the resistor.. i do not know what is next.. Please help!!!

Got it Fix!!!

Here is the solution to this problem just incase anyone else is having the same problem.. #1 check the blower motor by connecting it directly to your battery if it works then is not your motor.. #2 check for power consistency with a test light and check the plug to the blower motor.. Turn the knob to on if no power in any speed then its the Blower/ Heater switch if there is power then go to the resistor plug if no power then check your relay FYI your windshield wiper and your Blower heater motor relay they are both the say number and amp( I was told by FORD).. I swapped both relays and now I am getting power to the Resistor.. Then swap out the resistor and voila!!! it worked.. If not power to the resistor or the blower motor and you are sure is not the relay or the 30AMP green fuse in number 37 slot then its your heater/blower switch...

thanks everyone for the help...

This thread is old, but I have additional information is anyone out there has trouble with their 1998 vintage Contour/Mystique. Basically, the fan motor draws too much current for the wiring supplying it. Over time it heats and damages the wiring eventually resulting in shorts which will throw both the resistor (~$30) or the 60A fuse under the hood. You can replace these other bits again and again, but until you replace that wiring that is shorted, you'll have constant problems. I know, I lived it. My guy actually replaced the fan after the resistor & fuses and the fuse popped again which led him track down the wiring issue. He replaced that and it has been fine since. Best.
