2004 Chevy Malibu- a few problems

I have a 2004 Malibu with 150,000 miles. little things are starting to act up.

temp guage will work one day and not the next.

the shift on the console comes off it you lightly pull it up

Any suggestions? thanks, JB

For the temp gauge, it may be the sensor on the engine or it's connection. This for the gauge, not the computer. It wouldn't be too expensive, but be prepared for coolant loss if you take it out.

We used to check those by pulling the wire and grounding the wire. If the temp gauge went up it was a good indication the sensor was bad. That may cause other problems on a newer car, so I couldn't advise doing it. I would try replacing the sensor.

For the shifter, if it's a friction fit slide on, I would use a little weatherstripping adhesive. Only put it about one third around on the shifter end - you want to be able to remove it. Don't overdo it with the enthusiasm of "really fixing it good".

Hope this helps,

Bob

thanks Bob,

I was wondering if it was a friction fit. I couldn't find a set or allen screw anywhere!

Thanks again for the good advice. JB

On the shifter with both hands pull down hard on the housing below the seam, and a allen screw will appear.

The temp is the engine sensor, they will put in the upgraded one.
