brakes tapping noise or ticking noise

i just got ahold of a 1998 chevy cavalier cheap.
it has only 69,000 miles on it.

it makes a tapping or ticking noise only when the brake is applied. it kinda sounds like it is behind the dashboard behind the wheel, but not 100 % sure that is where it is coming from. you can hear it very clearly inside the car with the windows up.

would like to fix it myself. anyone know what this is?

my skill level is: change oil, change brakes, rotate wheels, and changed an oxygen sensor once.

thanks.

How slow can you go, and still hear that sound? The reason I ask is, if the sound can be heard when stopping at slow speed, then someone could walk or run alongside the car while you apply the brakes to find out if they hear it from a particular wheel area.

A cheap car like a Cavalier wouldn't have ABS brakes, on any of the models, would it?

yes it does have abs brakes. i looked under the hood today. sounds like the sound could be coming from somewhere where the brake fluid resivoir is or maybe what the brake fluid resivoir is attached to. what ever it is attached to, is located right behind where the steering wheel is.

I'm no master at this, but now I'm guessing that some unwanted signals are in the ABS system. Hopefully one of the pros here can shed more light on this, now that we know this much.

Like ecman, I'm no abs master either, but you might try pulling the abs fuse to see if it goes away. ABS light will come on, of course, but you'll have normal braking.

thank you.

is the abs fuse in located the fuse box?
could i just go ahead and drive it without the abs enabled?
also, would it pass inspection like that?

Should be labeled in the fuse panel. Might not pass inspection; depends on the inspection criteria, but I think most places would fail it with any warning lights illuminated even though a failed abs system will simply default to normal braking. I'm not going to tell you to drive it with the abs disabled or not. Best would be to fix it, but there are plenty of cars being driven around with the abs light glowing all the time.

thanks

now, i might be at least be able to narrow it down.

i had no idea how to troubleshoot this.

so, if i narrow it down to the abs system could anyone give me any advice on that? i have no clue what is involved in an abs brake system.

Likely going to need professional intervention if it's in the abs; it's not very DIY except for things like a sensor that fails.

o.k. i pulled the abs fuse and took it for a ride.
there was no noise with the fuse out.

the problem is in the abs system. but there is no abs light on the dash.

does anyone know if this will show up on a code reader at the autoparts store? if there is no abs light on.

thanks
