air bag light

friend has a 97 gmc 1/2 ton pickup is there any way to reset air bag light without a computer it had collision work done and ever since the light has been on , but the shop says bring it in and drop it off and we will try to get it done i know from previous exp. all you have to do is reset light once computer has verifed all the componets are ok. not sure if everything is connected how many are there and possible locations. collision work was the front end

Sorry, but because of the nature and complexity of the airbag system (and because there was collision work done) it would be irresponsible to offer such advice here. Take it in and get it done.

The air bag light on is indicating a problem, of course. If the air bags didn't blow, more than likely the front impact sensor is damaged. If the bags did blow, and the SDM was not replaced, it will need to be. But, since you do not have the proper equipment to determine this, and the repair facility said they will fix it, then by all means take it to them. As the tow guy stated, giving info out on the air bag system isn't a good idea. People have been killed by accidentally deploying air bags while trying to diagnose problems with them, and by testing connectors improperly.
