fast speedo

Can a cold wind affect the speedo on a 76 ford 4x4?
I went to pick up my grandson at school this afternoon and the speedo was crazy. I believe I was at or near the 45 mph speed limit but my speedo was reading between 70 and 80mph After stopping at a stop sign, it would go down to 30 mph and then to zero after about 20 seconds

It worked fine on the return trip home. It got cold last night and my truck sat on top of a hill with a cold wind.

Not sure about yours, but I had one on a Jeep CJ5 do that, and it was due to lack of graphite in the cable housing. Just popped off the cable at the speedo, shot it full of graphite and it was fine. Good starting point. May be something more sinister.

I've had a needle bounce before when the cable was in need of lube - I might still have a can of cable lube. Can't hurt anyway - when it warms up a little

This was odd though - like it had sped up about 20-30 mph.

I know, 12 degrees tonight. And we live in the sunny south. Off topic, where's the global warming?
