cv axel, major boot cut

I have a 91 GMC plow truck that has a major rip in the cv axel boot at the wheel - it's completely exposed from the bottom when the wheel is turned. It just started to make a clicking noise when the wheel is turned while in 4wheel drive. I pumped some grease in there and it seemed to help. I planned on changing the axel after plowing season. My question is will it last that long? And what is actually clicking?

Thanks in advance,

Lance

I am no expert, but if the joint gets dirty (and it probably will fairly fast), it may not last long. I would suspect the clicking are the bearing balls rubbing and knocking. I have heard they will lock up if they get really nasty.

Don't think it'll make it to the end of the season.
