Volvo S70 Key Programming?
My daughter wants to get her boyfriend a new programmable key for his 2000 or 2001 Volvo S70 (he lost the original) for his birthday.
Can she buy one from E-Bay and program it without going to the dealer? Key and programming at dealer is ~ $250. E-bay key is ~ $8; a big difference for a teenager.
TIA,
Bob

I'm pretty sure it needs to be programmed at the dealer. You may want to post on volvospeed.com or swedespeed.com to verify. I know Volvo dealers charge a lot. $250 seems high though.
Manufacturers have learned that their special key designs are a big profit maker for the company. People lose keys - they make money.
I'm curious if the money they make is any less than the thefts they prevent.

Apparently some of these Volvo keys require the dealer to contact the factory for a PIN number based on the vehicles serial number. Then may take an additional hour or more to program it.
Save the $ 8.00 and apply toward the tax at the dealer.

Thanks; she's bidding on a used one from Ebay and we're going to swap out the original circuit board into the new (used) one. Evidently, the buttons on his old one fell out so it likely works but needs buttons. We'll see what a $12 part will do.
