95 F150 Trans Kills Motor

95 F150 5.8 V8 Auto OD (2nd trans @ 150K) 235K Ran fine then sat for 2 months. When shifted to D or 2nd trans does not slip and engine dies. Will idle in reverse or 1st and runs fine in D or 2nd once rolling but dies right before it comes to a stop if I don't shift it into 1st. I think its not downshifting to 1st on it's own. What can I do?

Check or change the modulator valve on the side of the transmission. It is what will determine the shifting point.

When I put it up on blocks the all wheels turn. When I put under a load (tried to pull another truck) the front wheels don't turn. The axles to the wheels are turning but not grabbing. I took the hub off and there is nothing broken. It looks like a fairly simple process (two gears and a spring). Is there an adjustment someplace that I'm missing?
