Added to much oil, help!

I have a 1994 Chevy pick-up, 6 cyl. 4.3. I checked my oil to soon after I shut off the truck. All the oil must not have drained down into the pan. I added two quarts of oil when all I need was only one. My dip stick reads that I'm over a quart. Should I drain the extra quart out of the motor?

yes !! I wouldn't take the chance, for all the time it takes. A little over not too bad but it tells you everywhere not to overfill. If it's any easier for you, take filter off & dump it, just make sure to clean gasket & surface good when you put it back on.

I just put a new filter on about 4 weeks ago, there shouldn't be a problem taking it off. It's ok to re-use my old filter, will it seal alright again?

Yup, as long as you didn't tighten it too much putting it on. I always wipe a little oil on gasket (rubber) to prevent the gasket from buckling up when I install new filter. Check the gasket, if it looks bad, or your not sure, get new filter for the sake of $4-$5.

Make sure no oil leaks out after you tighten it back on. I once had the gasket spin out from overtightening, even though I had wiped oil around the gasket. Maybe the oil filter had a design flaw to it, but who knows. This was from about 25 years ago. Nonetheless, now I always look. I had been partially rebuilding an engine, when I found out I had a flood of oil developing under the car as I started it up, after that.
