Welcome to the forums! Did you install the thermostat upside down??? Have you flushed your cooling system lately? You should have about 1/3 of the reservoir with coolant in it when the engine is cool. It will fill up as the engine gets hot normally and will suck the coolant back into the engine as it cools. Expansion and contraction of water as it is heated and cooled. This is normal.

Could also have warped the head and blown a head gasket. Modern engines do not tolerate overheating well at all. If it's not the normal operation chandler describes (or backwards thermostat) that would be my guess. With the radiator full and cool, trying starting the engine with the raditor cap removed. If you get a geyser of coolant - blown head gasket. Even if you don't get an eruption, probably a good idea to have a compression check performed.
