Battery cap soot?

While checking the car for a trip by my better half, noticed there was a black sooty film on the inside of the battery filler caps. This was on the part of the caps exposed to the electrolyte. Battery is only about 1 yr old, and I only top off with distilled water when necessary.

Something to investigate or be concerned about?

Personally I wouldn't give it much thought. The gases given off by a battery no doubt leaves a residue and or attracts dirt. As long as there's no leakage and the battery is taking and holding a charge, I wouldn't be concerned on a one-year-old battery.

Thx Tow Guy......I just never remembered seeing it before. After I posted, I thought some more...I guess it could be coming from the outside thru the vent baffles. The specific gravity of the cells read ok, and the voltage is fine....

Probably just being a little paranoid after reading all the battery problems on here...lol
