how do I change the transmission fluid on a 97 honda civic ex ??

every honda i know of has a drain plug for that.
now, you referring to automatic transmission or manual?
if it's manual, you have a drain plug that looks like a large head bolt, at the lowermost edge of transmission, on driver side of it. just look for the largest head bolt that is the lowest of them all. refill plug should be same sized bolt head, on the radiator side of trannie, in the upper half of it. if varies from a model to a model some, so look it up in honda manual at library. best way to refill is to buy a fluid pump from any parts store, around $16, and use it. refilling from the bottle is total headache. if you want trannie to run great and forever, use royal purple or amsoil synth gear oil.
for automatic, i do this:
1. you can do simple refill, which is drain through drain plug, and refill through the dipstick hole. refill capacity can be found in the same manual.
2. i, personally, do total fluid replacement with flush. you need to determine how much TOTAL capacity is your trannie. you can drain only about 3rd or 4th of it during regular drain. so, i buy enough fluid to replace all the volume. then determine how much is one drain. say, total volume is 12 and drain is 4. so, i drain, refill with 4, drive for about 15 miles, drain, refill with 4, drive for about 15 miles, drain, refill with 4. thus, you have drained ALL of the ATF, and flushed trannie at the same time, while driving.

Nice in theory, but you would still have something on the order of 10-15% "old" fluid in the mix. As I opined in another thread, IMHO flushing and total fluid replacement is largely a waste of time and (getting more expensive all the time) fluids for very little, if any, benefits.
