Check engine light on........

Have a 96 Dodge Neon and the "Service Engine Soon" light keeps coming on. Sometimes it will come on, and sometimes it won't. I checked everything under the hood and the engine isn't low on anything, does this mean there is something going wrong with the car?

It could be as simple as a bad gas cap. Stop by an autozone or similar, ask them to scan the codes. Don't buy anything! You could go round and round doing that. Post back here with the results. If they can't give you a printout, write it down and post back. Normally unless its flashing (thats what mine will do in engine threatening situations), its probably still drivable.

Chrysler has been kind enuff to allow the "Knowledgeable" to scan their own cars.

Sit in the car, keys in hand and close the doors behind you. insert the ignition key, and in a rapid succession, without starting the car....Turn the key on-off-on-off-on....Look at the odometer display...it will give you a code # ...POxxxx...followed by a "dOnE" message. Post the code here and we'll take it from there.

I tried that on-off-on-off-on thing, no codes. This car does not have a digital dash if that has something to do with it.

Not really, unless the odometer is mechanical also.....

In that case, you would read the flashes of the C/E lamp

Ok, I had a shop check for the service codes and they came up with two.
PO401 EGR System Failure To Affect F/A, and, PO743 TCC Solenoid Circuit Open Or Short. I have no idea what these mean or what to look for.
Also the speedometer in this car doesn't work, and sometimes it does. Would any of these problems affect it?

TCC is torque converter clutch. Nothing in the EGR system would affect the speedo, but if you have an electronic speedo (as opposed to cable driven), the speed sensor is mounted in the tranny, so there's a remote chance there could be some relationship with the tcc.

Here's some EGR info:

If you google Dodge TCC solenoid you'll find a number of info sources. Bad solenoid or wiring in the system.

Well, today the "Service Engine Soon" light went off. It will do that, it will come on some days, then it will go off. Even with the light off, the speedometer will work, then it won't. Also today, you can hold the gas pedel down to the floor and the car wil not go over 45 mph. Would this have anything to do with the TCC or speed sensor?
