2001 Neon suddenly won't start

I have a 2001 Plymouth Neon and it has never had any problems running. Today it cranked and then died a handful of times and then suddenly the engine would no longer turn over. There is plenty of power and the battery connections and cables are good. An orange light that appears to be the outline of some kind of mechanical gizmo (transmission? solenoid?) appears on the dash with no explanation. Is there some kind of reset device somewhere? Any suggestions?

It's probably your check engine light. If you could somehow get your hands on a code scanner or somehow get your vehicle to the closest Autozone type store. They can read your trouble codes for free and if they have a knowledgable person behind the desk, they can tell you what the issue is.
