Saturn transmission trouble

I have a 2000 Saturn ls2? , and lately, I have had difficulty shifting into reverse from the parking position. I'll start the car, put my foot on the brake, and try to shift, but it seems locked in place. Sometimes after several tries, it will eventually shift, but there is no rhyme or reason to how it happens. Please help?

with the car running and in park, you MUST hear a faint "CLICK" near the shifter. If not It sounds like the Shift interlock is failing. Next time it sticks, have someone ensure the "BRAKE LIGHTS" are working, since they are both on related circuits.

Just to put your mind at ease.....Turn the ignition key one click to unlock( Not run)...put the shifter in neutral..start the car and you can shift all day without fear of being stuck somewhere. Thats not to say that you dont have to fix it, or you shouldnt fix it, but merely providing some peace of mind for an otherwise frightening proposition.
