2000 Accord sticky tray

The plastic tray in our Accord, (located in the counsol, under the radio, in front of the stick shift) has become very sticky. We have not spilled anything there, it is as if the plastic itself has broken down. Anyone got a suggestion for getting this fixed?

clarification

Sorry, it is the surface of the tray and not the runners. In other words, where you set your stuff like coins or sunglasses. That surface is sticky.

Has anyone used an "EYEDROPPER-TYPE" air freshener? Alcohol based products wreak havoc on plastics.

When the kids were very little, I kept a bottle of Liquid Ora-Gel in the Cup holder tray....after all these years, I can still feel the scars in the plastic, from the day the bottle tipped over...
