2003 Nissan Frontier

The wheel openings have a wide, plastic trim which doesn't fit that tightly against the body, so they filled the gaps with rubber beads that are barbed to hold them in place.

Now the rubber beads are shrinking and coming loose. I pulled one off and kept it. My eye is not drawn to the gap that is now between the plastic trim and the truck body.

I think these beads are only there for appearance, not to keep rain out of the space between the body and the plastic trim.

Does anyone not agree with this reasoning and conclusion?

Thanks.

The other use might be as a buffer to keep the hard plastic of the trim from rubbing into the paint.
