When it does shift into third doer it shift smooth or does it feel like you are driving over rumble strips? If this is the case a fluid change might cure your trouble. Your car has a plug on the torque converter to allow it to be drained, it must be drained when fluid is changed or it will not help. When refilling the trans pour in 4 quarts, start the engine and continue to fill, trans and converter will hold 9 or 10 quarts in total, add then check DO NOT OVERFILL.

new car with a tranny problem

well we asked auto zone about it they said that we need to flush the system out and tighten the bands because the tranny fluid was almost black and smelled burnt when we checked the dip stick the fluid was barely touching the end so we added more to see if it was because no one put the fluid in that wasn't it so now we r waiting for money to do what auto zone suggested.

Look below the throttle body where the accelerator linkage is......There should be an extra cable that runs to the body of the trans.......Make sure it hasnt broken off.....

Just a random thought, but I wouldn't be consulting an auto parts store for auto repair advice. Auto parts stores with qualified mechanics on staff are few and far between. Having said that, a fluid & filter change as twister recommends wouldn't hurt.

I suspect a 13+ year old vehicle with tranny fluid that is black and burnt isn't long for this world. You said "new" car; this was recently purchased?

Side note for diezel: Will a '95 Marquis throw tranny codes?

It depends......

After 1996 ...all cars are OBD2 ...the earlier stuff wasnt required to have "Monitors " for non critical "Engine " functions. Being a 95...it could go either way.

we bought it off of someone and i don't know if it will throw codes and it was a mechanic at the auto part store but we were also told by another that most of the time flushing a 95 marquis is bad they said 95% of the time it will kill the car

yes you can pull codes on a 95 Gran Marquis but you need a new generation star tester, and the only place that you might find one of these is at a Ford Dealer .
good luck
