Taurus dies in Drive!

A friend has a 98 Ford Taurus that has suddenly developed a problem. It dies when put in Drive. The car will go in reverse and run fine, but dies when put in Drive. He has had a miss in the motor for some time but the car always continued to run. Could the problem be related to the miss or is it a transmission problem. The old car is rough and he doesn`t want to put too much money in a repair as he is older and lives on social security. Thanks to anyone who could shed some light on this problem..

Could go either way, but the fact it will continue to run if shifted into reverse would tend to point toward a tranny problem, which are quite common on '90's Tauruses (Tauri?).

Wouldn't hurt to service the tranny if it's been a while, but I wouldn't get my hopes up.
