ford is running rough
i have a 1993 ford explorer with a lt of miles on it(4.0} as i was driving it it felt ike it was running out of gas when the tank was half full and the check engine light come on and off and when i leave it idle their is black smoke coming out the tail pipe and some of the time it go dead on it own can someone help me out

Go to Autozone/Advance Auto and have the codes pulled from the computer, they will do it for free. Do not buy anything yet, come back here and tell us the codes we will help you sort them out.

A faulty fuel pressure regulator comes to mind. My car had that symptom once. Left black vapor trail and loss of power. This is only a first attempt guess, but it's fun to see if you might be right.
