I had the same problem with an 89 Cherokee. I had to replace the ignition lock (where the key goes in). THis may be your problem too. Good luck!!

First things first. Try forcing the steering wheel to the right and left while trying to turn the key. Sometimes the steering wheel lock position will jam the cylinder.

Lightly pound the key with a small hammer or mallet while trying to turn the ignition on. This is how we do it in the shop for the Malibus and Grand Ams. It may work fine from that point on, or it may mess up again. Need to replace the cylinder to fix it properly, or you could get by with removing all the tumblers and thoroughly cleaning them, removing all the build up on them. Regrease and reinstall, good to go .

With that Jeep, I couldn't turn it off, due to the spring in the lock breaking.

We had more than a few service calls for this problem when I was in the business. If it wasn't the steering wheel jammed either too far left or right - so jiggle the wheel back and forth while attempting to turn the ignition as in the answer above.

But on at least 3 occasions we had the car owner get a spare key from their house and the ignition turned. The ignition key was worn down from repeated use and would no longer turn the tumbler.
