Question 95 VW Jetta fuel gauge

Sometimes, when I fill the gas tank, the gas gauge will not register full until I drive 20 miles. It is not a major concern for me, just curious. Does this mean that the fuel gauge is slowly going south. Wouldn't be entirely surprised, the car has 205k on it. It still loves being on the right side of the speedometer .

thank you in advance for any possible input and don't have too much fun!!!

I would say the fuel sending unit attached to the fuel pump might be going south.

It requires dropping the fuel tank. I would say about a $500 fix if you bring it to someone. This would probably include a new pump as well, since you might replace that while it's dropped.

Does the gauge drop normally?

Yes it does, and the weird thing is that the needing 20 miles to register the tank being full doesn't always happen. Happens like once every 3 or4 fillups.
