Make/model/year?

There are a wide range of possibilities. For starters you can go by Auto Zone if there's one in your area and have the codes read to see what's behind the check engine light. If you post back the results here we can have a go at diagnosing it. Getting gas may or may not be related directly to either the problem or the check engine. A loose gas cap or one with a bad o-ring can give you a check engine light, for instance but would not cause the chugging..

Most parts stores that do it don't charge for a read. I think some may charge a nominal fee to give you a print-out, but never happened to me.

They're hoping you'll buy the parts from them, but be careful about buying parts until you have someone knowledgeable analyze the codes that are pulled and that's generally not the guy behind the parts counter.
