GMC Safari rear lift gate struts won't hold hatch up

I'm trying to locate the nomenclature, part number, and process for removing and replacing the rear "lift gate struts" that hold the rear hatch up on a 1997 GMC Safari. Even finding out the actual name of the item seems to be a challenge. I have a Delco part number of 510-715 but no visual confirmation. I've heard the electrical connection may be a little tricky to remove.

They are called "support cylinders". Have you talked to a dealer?

Wow, Rockauto has the exact same part for $13. Never used them, have heard good and bad, but for $31 I think I'd try.

Lift Support

All,
Thanks. Lift support, support lift, support cyclinders whatever they call them. I've found a couple of resources. Haven't talked with a dealer yet. With quick help like this, I don't think I'll need to. The van is away at college but I'll have the parts waiting when it comes home for more money this weekend!

I have a Haynes manual but it doesn't go into detail on instillation. Any ideas on more indepth instructions?

Chris

replace one at a time and you will probably need to prop the door with a dowel rod even then. i have a 97 astro and so far havn't needed to replace them. or i would have better instructions for you.
