New Muncie for an old Pontiac
Hello, I'm in the market for a new 4 speed for my old Firebird. There are quite a few places out there selling "new" Muncie's. Some use the old cases and mainshaft and all other parts are new. The other guys have all new parts including a new improved case and gears etc. Some say the old parts are better, some say the new stuff is much improved over the old. What do you guys think? Your opinions will be appreciated. I'm looking at a M20 wide ratio box.

Well, I'd say metallurgy has improved, but that means the Engineers could reduce the amount of metal required. Bearings and such have gotten better as well.
Another post reminded me of this, and I'd seriously suggest you contact some of the following companies, they seem to know their stuff. One of them is the king of Pontiac stuff.
http://www.nunzi-pontiac-expert.com/ They are the BEST! They've been in business for as long as I could read about cars.
http://www.sdperformance.com/ I think this is the same company I knew, maybe not.
http://performanceyears.com/newsite/index.html Maybe these guys as well.
btw..what year and model?

If you are going for reliability. I would go with a Saginaw. It has a iron case, were the Muncie's have an aluminum case.
Before I went to a automatic, I ran a 4 speed. I broke 2 Muncie's. On trans number three. I when with a Saginaw, and never broke another trans. Broke other parts, but that was caused by the lose nut behind the wheel..lol

The guy's selling the all new trans have this new supercase. It's suppose to be beefier in the right places. Tremec makes a 5 speed kit for my car that would bolt right in but is kind of pricey. The main problem with this kit is the one I've been married to for 18yrs if you know what I mean.
