2000 Pontiac Gran Prix security problem
the car is a 3.1 - it started and died once idle hit 800 rpms - can't shift out of park - security light flashes - the key does not have an imbedded chip - I tried 2 different keys, still starts and then almost instantly stops
any tip or clue is appreciated - the car does not have an alarm and I'm not aware of any anti-theft deterents - it's a 2000 SE
thanks

about a month back both the security and abs lights were flashing - is the security system tied into the wheel hub?
as for the chip - there's no embedded chip in any of the keys - none that can be seen

you can't see the chip in the key but they do have to be programmed.
I happen to have a 2000 GP SE of my own and had to buy several keys.
as to the system itself; I don;t know anymore than what the owners manual states. Happen to have one? If not, I could get mine and see what it says.

yes it was but that has been several years ago. I spoke with a person recently that stated many of the security type keys are now available from other sources though. I haven't checked with any to confirm though.

thanks for the input
I have a valet key that's seldom been used - I'll try that - if the security system is still engaged then it has to be the reader in the ignition switch - bet that's a pricey repair
thanks again

the system is a pk3 system i beleive, new keys must be re-learned to the tdm , this is done by doing a 30 minute re-learn procudure. I can tell you how if u haven;t solved your problem yet. This will only work if the key is the problem or your car lost theft data. Ohter wise the problem must be solved before your keys can be programed. This cars had theft deterent module problems, exciter module problems, and wire breaking problems in the steering colum that could be your problem

it's the theft deterent module and the chafed wire - the wire touched ground and took out the module - there's a service bulletin posted online - I contacted GM since the issue was a defect in manufacture - they were about ready to help when they determined the car had too many miles on it - once I have the work order from the repair I'll push GM some more - they knew it was flawed - they never contacted me - seems they should at least cover the cost of the module
