1999 Jeep Cherokee

1999 Jeek Cherokee, 4.0, 119K. Should front hubs stay ingaged while vehicle is in 2WD.

Nope. They should disengage after you put the lever back in 2WD. Might take 10 feet for it to disengage.


What problems are you having?

Try backing up after you disengauge 4 wheel drive, sometimes this helps the hubs to pop out of gear. Shouldnt have to move mor than 2 or 3 feet.

I don't know about your 99 but my 1990 cherokee has full time hubs
The front drive shaft will disengage but the axles still turn
Backing up and sometimes turning the wheel a little will help to disengage a stubborn transfer case.

The hubs stay ingaged but the front drive shaft does not. Is there a vacumn shift motor or control switch that could be defective? Thank You.

After looking at some diagrams, your vehicle does not have a motor/vacuum controlled hubs.

Your hubs and bearings are one assembly. If you are getting groaning type noises, you need to replace the hub assembly.
