Engine thermostat v-6 saturn

My 2002 saturn vue has a stuck open thermostat.
The service engine lite is on. Suv runs fine.
It would cost almost $500 to replace..its buried underneat someplace.
I plan to drive this vehicle and not fix IT. thinking of trading it in the spring...can i cause damage driving around like this..??????? Thank you

As long as it is stuck open, the only problem you will have is the Service Engine light error code and it won't heat as fast on cold mornings. The thermostat in a closed position keeps the warmer water circulating in the engine and heating system until it reaches about 190 degrees. It opens and circulates through the radiator to keep the engine from over heating. Have you had the error code read?

Check this link. Depending on which engine you have, the job goes from moderate difficulty to fairly easy. I can't see a $ 500 repair regardless of which it is. I would think somewhere in the $ 80 - $ 150 range.

Seems pretty steep to me, too; $500 would equate to about 5-6 hours of labor. I can't imagine any thermostat taking that much time.
