Too much oil 2005 Nissan Sentra

I realized when I changed the oil on my wife's car I put in too much oil. I just wasn't thinking and I had used the left over 5 qrt and then put about 3 quarts of the new. So I put a about a 1/2 quart too much. It was just over the top fill mark so I didn't think much about it. Then my wife's gas mileage went down from about 33 to 25 the first tank after the change. I'm assuming that may have something to do with it.

What's the best thing to do? I was thinking about just taking the oil filter out and putting in a new one. I think that will take enough oil out. I guess I could do another change if I need to.

1/2 quart isn't something that should really cause a problem.

That said, if you're intent on getting this 1/2 quart out, take a turkey baster or something similar and try sucking it out through the fill hole in the valve cover. See if you can get the 1/2 quart out through this method.

I agree with jared; I wouldn't expect a half quart over to have any impact. The oil filler swap will probably work depending on the size/capacity of the filter.

Thumbs up too much oil

You could loosen the drain plug and let th 1/2 quart drain out or pull the filter, drain the oil and put the filter back. No biggie!
