99 chevy silverado 5.3 4wd Died wont start

While driving truck died. Coasted off road and it would not start. Turns over like as if it is out of gas. Had plenty of gas, all lights and gauges work but now my fuel gauge is on empty. Put a new fuel pump on about 1 year ago and other than u joints and brakes, I put in a new heater core. Have had no engine problems at all. Does have alot of miles but I have always kept everything in good check. Fuses and such seem to be fine. Any suggestions before I have it towed again to get it to shop. K

Definitely dump some gas in it first. You may be out.

If that doesn't start it cycle your key a couple of times, turn the key off and depress the little schrader valve (looks like a small tire stem) on the fuel rail. You should have some pressure in it. If not, your fuel pump or regulator is acting up - assuming you have fuel and a reasonably clean filter.

Yes, check your fuel...

Had a guy in a vehicle ahead of me a long time back (may have been a Cherokee or similar). He ran over a piece of sheet metal on the road, it flipped up and sliced his gas tank open. He kept driving since he was on the interstate, but pulled over in about a mile cause he ran out of gas. It sprayed all over my windshield and front end, but he hadn't even noticed the film on his back window.

I pulled over and gave him a lift. He said since the car kept driving ok, he was going to check for damage when he got home instead of taking a chance on the shoulder of the freeway.

Stuff happens

99 chevy that died

I tried putting in gas but no avail. All my lights work, battery seems fine, checked all fuses and relays they seem fine, plug for the fuel pump seem intact.. I'm thinking fuel pump again??? Someone told me my computer system could of went out but would all my dash gauges work except my fuel gauge went to eeee and won't move and my low fuel light flashes. Turns over but thats it. Can't tell if I can hear the fule pump kick in when I turn the key. Thanks K

Do the check on the rail schrader valve. It'll tell you quite a bit.

This happened to me in my 99 chevy suburban. Fuel guage was faulty, but I didn't know it.
One of the kids reset the trip odometer when I was using it to remind me to fill.
Guage went haywire (to all extremes) then I lost power. Sat on the shoulder of a busy interstate with 4kids & a dog in the heat of a Tennessee summer day!

Hopefully by now you put fuel in!

In August, the same thing happened to me in my 93 Silverado. Died while driving and would crank fine but not start. I first thought fuel pump since I was getting spark to the distributor. Took it into the shop and they replaced the ignition coil. While at it, they also put on a new distributor cap and rotor. Took care of the problem, drives great now. Good luck.
