Interested in buying a Liberty 2005, has about 42,000 miles, when I checked the muffler, alot of black on the pipe, so, what is that black stuff? My other car with over 90,000 isn't as dirty -- Help, thanks

It could be oil residue from oil burning, but it's likely unburned fuel residue from an engine that was run cold a lot with short trips, mostly in town. Should it be the latter, it'll clean up fairly quickly with a long trip at highway speed.

Soot. Sounds like the engine is running rich. Several possibilities there. I would get a code reader on it and see if anything comes up for starters.
