I have a 2003 dodge ram 1500 with 4.7 liter motor automatic with the overdrive button on gear lever.what i would like to know is that i drive 36 miles round trip to work each day.I often brake a lot & its not a level road so would i get better gas mileage not using overdrive & would it hurt motor or transmission.thanks for your help.

As far as better gas mileage, you will just have to try it and see, it will not hurt the engine or trans to run it in drive instead of overdrive

overdrive is the most mpg favorable gear in your gearbox. it kicks in only when a specific momentum/speed is reached, for max economy. in a stop n go traffic it may not even engage at all. so just let it be.
