You'll prob get responses here, but it may be better to put the question in the automotive repair forum. Please give all the details of the problem when you post, model, year, etc, etc.

My daughter has a 1996 Dodge Neon, her car stereo stopped working, all the lights work on the stereo but she has no volume. We replaced it with a different stereo same thing, then we bought a brand new stereo. We installed the new one, there is power going to the radio, all the lights come on, but still no sound out of the speakers. I have no idea what to troubleshoot next, we have power, but no sound. Any ideas?

Did you double check your fuses for radio? You know you should have 2 power wires going into that stereo right? One will be constant power with key off, (for radio/clock memory) and the other will only have power with key on. May be a fuse labelled as accessories, and another for radio. If you have power to both with key on, then it should be o.k. Let's start there.

Mike, if the stereo is turning on, it's got power. The two power cables are to retain the stereo memory when the car is off.

Sounds like there might be a defective amp downstream from the stereo.

Hook a standalone speaker of some sort to the speaker outputs see if you get anything. I looked at the diagrams on Autozone, but no info. Is it possible they use the body as return for the speakers? 3 units, it has to be an external amp (in a Neon?)as stated, or wiring to the speakers. Same wiring harness? I'd start looking there.

Yes I am aware of that, but I have come across stereo's in the past that would put out nothing even though all lit up, just because the constant/memory source was not hooked up, that's why I was asking. With that said, chysler incorporated what they called a floating ground system on the stereo systems a while back which played havoc with a lot installers, and I'm not 100% sure in that year what it's got. I basically got to the point, due to lack of info from any sources on these systems, that I just started from scratch, ran my own wires independant of the chrysler harness, to all speakers & used only the power wires in the harness. In the long run, it was faster than trying to isolate the floating ground problem.

I'll check the power wires again, also all the speaker wires. I'll hook up a different speaker to each side and see what happens. Does this radio have to be grounded to the dashboard and do the speakers need to be grounded?
