Seems like I remember a long time ago,
about adding some common household liquid,
to my windshield washer resevoire (with water),
in leu of buying premix and adders in an automotive store.

Anyone got any ideas what it was.

TIA

Probably vinegar?
My mother used to use vinegar and water to clean her windows.I don't know how well it cleaned, supposedly it worked, but I wouldn't use it on windshields.

I am not sure how the washer pump will hold up to vinegar, but I always just fill it with water in the summer and then drain it and use washer fluid with alcohol for the winter.

I guess you could put what ever you want in their but I think dish soap would streak bad in the sun.

Where I live I can get the winshield washer fluid on sale for a dollar a gallon. So for that little, why take the risk?

Then again, why waste the money? Like hotrodder, I run water with car wash detergent during the summer, and switch to washer fluid (with alcohol) for the winter.

I don't think its really about saving a dollar. More of a convenience thing. The places that have windshield washer fluid for a dollar or less is walmart, parts stores or some gas stations when they have a blow out sale. And the places that it is convenient at charge the highest, such as grocery stores. I don't know about you but I rarely walk into stores other than clothing and food. I can't really afford to shop in stores like best buy, circuit city, and tool stores, I am not rich enough to shop at places like that so I shop on the internet for parts; and washer fluid is pretty expensive to ship.

Its an inconvience more so than saving a buck. Plus the main difference is washer fluid gurantees not to streak, thats it. So unless you have a windshield of bugs that will streak no matter what just use water in summer. A 50/50 mix of vinegar and water starts to concern me as strong, as that stuff constantly dries on the paint use after use.
