Is this a coil issue??

2000 Nissan Xterra starts to run real rough after about 1 hour driving. Then quits and wont restart because of no spark.
Bottom of distributer is hot (where coil is) to touch.
Will start rough after about an hour and smooth out then work good for another hour.
We did have it going for about 2 hours last nite to get it home and there were no stops or slow perionds. I figure the air from rapid movement kept the distributor cool.

I think it is the coil which I believe is in the distributor.
Can someone second this or support another idea?
Thanks

Also I started it this morning again after 3 hours of cool down and It cranked and cranked then started to sputter and finally slowly came to life over the period of about 3 minutes.

I read on the net that that model had a problem with overheating ignition modules (Igniter)
Seems to me that it made a awfull bit of heat for a module.
But
I ordered he distributor anyway $266
Thanks
