Check Engine Code P0442
I own a 2005 Hyundai Accent GSL with 54kmi. My check engine light went on yesterday. I went to the auto store and got a code of P0442 (Evaporative Emission Control System Leak, small).
In April of 08, I had a similar problem code P0441. (inserffiont purge found purge valve faulty) the dealer replaced the purge control valve.
Do you know what would cause these problems? Bad gas? Faulty parts?
I hate to go to the dealer and find out I am not covered and get charged $$$ for repairs.
Any suggestions on how I may fix this? Thanks

Your car should have a 5yr/60k mile basic warranty, and a 10yr/100k mile drivetrain warranty along with a good emissions warranty.
You should not have to pay a dime..

You have to pay to find out what your warranty covers????????????
Wow! Never heard that one before.
Common problem on evap systems is simply leaky gas cap/seal, although yours is pretty young for that. Here is some info on emissions warranties.
Information on Manufacturers emissions Warranties for 1995 Newer Cars and Trucks | On-Board Diagnostics (OBD) | US EPA
Personally I would opt for a good independent garage unless I was sure it was a warranty-covered repair, but $80/hr is pretty reasonable for a dealership. I think the ones around here are in the $100 range.

The dealer won't know if the work needed to be done is covered under the warranty. So you have to pay them to look at the car if it's not covered and they do not do the repairs.. If they do the repairs it's included in the bill. I live in NYC. Pay for everything...
"Your vehicle is less than 2 years old and has less than 24,000 miles (up to 8 years/80,000 miles for certain components); " is the language. so who knows???
I'm going to the dealer next week. I'll let you know. If I knew for sure I wasn't covered I go to my mechanic.
thanks for the info...

I would perform a visual inspection make sure no emission vacuum(the diagram should be under you hood) lines are cracked or leaking. make sure you as cap is tight, disconnect your battery and see what happen, when you system tests the evap system again if you still have a leak the engine light will return. The code is nothing to lose sleep over, so i would try that, if it returns then you need to decide further.

Yesterday I heard a hissing noise coming from the rear of the car. I took a look and it was coming from the gas cap. I opened the gas cap door and the cap fell out. I put it back and disconnected the battery for a while. I’m off work for the weekend so I hope when I take a ride the light stays off.
Thanks for all your help.
PS: my wife just told me today the light on her car went on!!!!!!!!!!!!! It never ends…
