Question 1997 Ford Explorer V8 Code PO401

I think code PO401 has something to do with the EGR system failure. Where is the EGR valve and solenoid on the engine and how can I isolate the problem part?

it may be difficult to isolate the problem part without a scanner, but most of the time it is either a bad dpfe sensor or clogged egr intake passages, the vac solenoid and egr valve rarely fail.

Easiest way to determine if the problem is physical or electrical is to vacuum pump the EGR while at idle.
If the engine stalls or runs extremely ragged you then know the valve works and the passages are clear. Confirm vacuum from the solenoid to the valve and if that's in place move on to the DPFE...
If the engine DOESN"T run poorly with vac to the EGR at idle, you'll need to remove the valve check it for proper operation and then clear all passages of carbon
