1989 Buick Skylark -- paint peeling off the top

My 1989 Skylark has the original dark grey paint and the top is peeling. Can you please provide me with instructions on how to prepare and paint the top so that the paint does not continue to peel off. Thanks very much!

New paint will not match your old faded paint.

You would need to sand off all the old paint, prime then paint.

Thanks very much for your guidance.

I have a can of spray paint with a grey color pretty close to the original. Is there a primer especially made for automotive body use?

Many thanks.

I doubt you could paint an entire top with spray cans and have it come out decent.

Basically what you do is sand smooth the entire section to be painted, prime, wet sand and then apply the finish paint. There are several different primers made for automotive paints. Lacquer primer is the most common since it dries quick and wet sands well.
