Cam Sensor Magnet missing???

89 Oldsmobile with 3.8 liter motor...Front wheel drive car.

I'm told the cam sensor magnet is in the cam gear. Will the car run if it falls out?

Can it malfunction to cause loss of power?

Car used to get 30mpg at freeway speeds and had more power. Now only gets 21 on freeway and has noticeably less power. The base of the EGR is melting. I took out the O2 sensor and didn't notice a change, so the cat is probably not plugged and was changed 40,000 miles ago. Also have changed, plugs, wires, coil pack, PCV.

Yes, it will run with the magnet gone, and may cause driveability issues.

You should get a check engine light when the magnet falls off. The car will still run, sometime very well. I had the same problem with a 1986 olds.
