Unhappy My 1974 VW Beetle wont start.

Having problems getting my beetle started. Have put in a new battery, stiil wont start. Does with a jump start though but as soon as turn engine off it wont go again on its own. Had a look at starter motor , gave cylinoid a light bash with a hammer , no joy. At the moment im recharging battery , thinking that its the alternator that faultly, any adive ?

If you dropped the new battery in and it wouldn't crank, it won't be the alternator. With a bad alternator, a brand new battery would be capable of powering the ignition system for quite some time. Re-check all battery cables and terminals; pretty good chance you've got some corrosion somewhere.

Common malady with starter or solenoid where some internal problem can be overcome by extra boost from battery. This can be due to bad contact or winding. But by all means, as suggested, check all connection points with both negative battery to engine ground, and also hot feed between positive battery, solenoid or relay, and starter.

Vdubs used to have generators. I wonder when they switched to alternators?

I"d say new starter or solenoid; replace both. A pain to get to it more than once for the price difference.
