Dodge 5spd manual trans

1998 Dodge Ram 1500, 5.9L, 4x4, 163K

Shifting into 1st or 2nd while stopped is a real pain and usually requires shifting into one of the other gears and then it will slip into 1st/2nd. If the truck is rolling it shifts into 1st and 2nd no problems. While driving shifting is smooth, no grinding, no hesitation. Once it goes into 1st/2nd (while at a stop) I can shift in between the two with out resistance.

Once in a while when I come of the highway 5th gear seems a little sticky . I'm wondering if maybe the shifting mech is slightly out of alignment or maybe the trans fluid needs replacing.

Other ideas or knowledge?

Thanks.
Brian

Worn Synchronizer rings.........

The fluid in a manual trans is ONLY for lubrication , and performs absolutely NO other task( unless you wish to consider "Cooling " as a function). So changing it accomplishes nothing.

Is the clutch in good shape?... A worn disc can give similar symptoms, but would cause the issue at all times. Shifting between 2 gears to "Smooth " them out, is a tell tale for Synchros.....Any Grinding between gears?

Is it a diesel or gasser? With my 3500 diesel I found that (silly as it may seem) if I move my seat one notch forward, I tend to press my clutch more fully and the gears change better. Likewise coming to a stop when cold, I have to wait until it rocks before it goes into first. But clutch condition has alot to do with it.

Thanks for the responses. It's Gasoline, no grinding when shifting. Have adjusted seat in case I wasn't depressing all the way. Will check the throw of the clutch this weekend to make sure it's fully disengaged. Once when it wouldn't shift I turned off the engine and toyed with it a bit, with and with out the clutch still wouldn't shift into 1st/2nd, sometimes 3rd. Started back up, put it in reverse backed out and continued on my merry way.
