6 octane

How can 6 octane make a night and day difference in my car? My 95 VW Jetta III has a sticker inside the gas door saying high test recomended. It runs decently on 87 octane, but is a totally different animal on 93 octane. For some reason, it is not very happy unless I give it Mobil gas, not sure why.

Cause thats the way the engine management computer is programmed. It has to retard the spark and all to avoid detonation when using the lower octane gas. One reason I didn't buy a VW, though I really liked the car.

I know its funny, but I've read reports where you may actually get enough better milage using hi-test to offset the addl cost. Seems like that was only when it was mostly hiway driving though.
