Running lights won't turn off

I just got a 1995 Dodge Caravan which is in really good shape. It was fine until yesterday when I couldn't turn off the running lights when I parked. I did everything the manual said (make sure it is in Park, apply the parking brake, etc.) but eventually had to disconnect the battery to turn off the lights. Is there a way I can just disconnect the running lights? I really don't need them and I am a disabled senior who can't really afford repairs and it is a hassle connecting & disconnecting the battery.

Hope somebody has some bright ideas (no pun intended!).

You have to engage the parking brake to turn off running lights? Really?

If memory serves me right ...........There's a small circuit board behind the headlight switch (left side I/P pod)......These have been known to fail before
