oil additives;good or bad
I know there is a saying, "don't fix what ain't broken" or something like that. I've started adding about 1/2 a liter of lucas oil to every oil change when I do it, for the last couple years. No problem here, I just feel like it is a good thing to do. I also added a small portion to my last differential oil change a couple years ago as well. My 2002 GMC pickup does not have posi-traction so I figured it should be ok.
The question is, " would it be ok to add lucas transmission fix additive ( the red stuff that comes in a 24ounce plastic bottle that sells for about $14-$15 at Canadian Tires) to my next trany oil and filter change? I have absolutely no troubles with my transmission and the oil and filter have been changed twice since i've owned it and the trany has never been abused. It has 190,000klms on it. I know this lucas oil for tranys is supposed to expand the seals internally repairing it if there is a problem. Like I said I have no problems with my 4L60-E 4Spd auto transmission and I don't want to cause any problems by adding this. I was wondering if it would be harmless in adding this to a perfectly healthy trany without damaging it. I just feel that it would be a good maintenance thing to do just like when I added a trany cooler to it 5 years ago, although I don't do any towing, yet. Thanks

Had a problem with my Dodge trans (Bulletin pointed out the fix) and while researching I read where Dodge doesn't want ANYTHING but trans fluid in it's trans..........
I'm a kind of believer that if you change fluids on sched and use a good grade of trans fluid/oil/diff fluid/ anti freeze.....whatever you're changing, you really don't need additives............If you're NOT paying proper attention to your maintenance, the additives probably won't help........
That's my story and I'm stickin to it!!

I agree with the proper maintenance thingy, but my Cummins with 370k gets a drink of Lucas with each change. Seems to smooth it out a little. Like they say, though, "Dodge makes it -- Cummins shakes it"

oil additives
Recently purchased a late model GM and while going thru the owners manual I stopped by the motor oil reccomendations, there in big letters was "DO NOT ADD ANYTHING TO THE OIL. I used to ask my customers "do you take aspirin when you dont have a headache"? But that is just me.

Thanks for everyones advice and comments. I think I will pass on adding the lucas oil to my next tranny oil and filter change. I will buy 5 litres of good quality fluid and just use that but I will continue to add lucas oil to my motor at every change at 5,000 klms.
I don't agree with all the manufacturers recommendations on oil changes. My old '87 GMC that I purchased new with a 4.3 litre motor was the best vehicle I ever owned. Later in the years I would use straight 30 weight or 20w-50 for my oil changes for the summer and 10w-40 in the winter and always at 5,000 klms (3000 miles). Never once did I have a problem with the engine. It went in for its last e-test at 425,000 klms before I retired it and it passed with flying colors. I also added duralube and other additives at times. But this 2002 with the same motor is a pile of junk ( GMs quality went down in the late '90s) compared to my simple old '87. I had the old 3 speed turbo 400 hydromatic in that one which I never abused.
Like I said thanks for the advice and I will use only a good tranny fluid; not sure what kind is more superior than another type but I will stay with conventional oil instaed of synthetic.

By the way"retired wrench", yes I do take 1 81 mg of aspirin a day, but not for headaches, it would again be for preventative maintenance in hopefully not getting a stroke..lol Beer 4U2
