OEM Filters

I have a 95 Camry and I have been buying oil filters and air filters directly from Toyota dealers and replacing them myself. Local stores like Pepboys, Straussauto, etc have Purolator or Fram oil and air filters for my car for a lot less than genuine parts. Is it so important to keep using Toyota oil and air filters?

Short answer, no. A fair number of people will tell you to stay away from Fram as they've had some quality problems over the years. I've been driving Toyotas for 30 years, have never installed a Toyota filter, and have never had an engine failure. Our previous car was a '95 Camry 4cyl that had 175,000 miles on it and still going strong when we traded it off. Similarly, the previous engine in my wrecker went almost 300,000 miles on Carquest store brand filters; 120,000 miles on current engine.
