96 Cavalier airbag and seatbelt lights

Hi from a newbie,

I have a 96 Cavalier base w/automatic and the 2.2 engine. I live in Chicago and we had major rain Friday. My street was completely underwater, from curb to curb. The car was parked on the street, the water was almost up to the bottom of the doors. I did NOT see any water inside the car, the carpet appears completely dry, no musty smell. I went to the hardware store to buy a pump and noticed the two lights were staying on. I had my seatbelt on and even tried buckling the passenger one, lights still on. The fuse for the airbags is not blown. I'm very hesitant to go any further as I don't want to chance triggering the airbags.

I looked on the internet and found a recall dating back to '98. My wife bought the car new and is certain it's never been back to the dealer for this.

Will I have to go to a dealer to have this diagnosed? The car is a work beater and probably not worth hardly anything, should I just disable the airbags and drive it till it dies?

Any info MUCH appreciated!

NO!!!

whatever you do dont disable the airbags. if your not a trained professional and know how the system works dont fool with the airbags at all. i know from expirience because a guy in my shop tryed to replace the computer system in the airbags and it blew in his face. a broken cheek bone later he learned to send the vehicle to the dealer. I get very leery when the light is on simply because if the system isnt working properly then how does the airbag know when to deploy? for your own sake bring it to the dealership and have them look at it and see whats wrong
