Shifter Locked
Hi:
Pathfinder 2001. While connected to the camper I found a bad socket on thecamper. When I wiggled it I must have shorted out something in the pathfinder. Shifter is stuck in PARK and the rear tailights do not work. I used a small screwdriver to unlock the shifter but when put back in park it locks again. Sounds like a fuse. Any ideas? Thank you very much.

The shifter is directly connected to the brakes. Note, you could never bring it out of park unless you pressed your brakes. It does sound as if a fuse is blown. You'll just have to pull the cover off the fuse block(s) and look in the lid for the identification of the brake fuse. Or you can look for a blackened fuse.

Hi:
I checked all the fuses in the engine compartment but they all looked fine. I could not find any fuses around the dash. I could not find a specific fuse for the brake lights or shifter. I assumed it was a small fuse as opposed to the square box higher amp units.

chandler is on the money..if your brakelights don't work, neither will the solenoid that unlocks the shifter. Keep looking..theres a fuse somewhere. I've fixed this on 4-5 cars..and I'm no mechanic..just the one people ask.

Hi:
Found the third fuse box! Sure enough 2 blown fuses. Thank you. Found this text online which helped.
HEY! It is as simple as a blown fuse. In the fusebox on the lower left side of the driver's seat pull off the cover to the storage box and behind is the fuse box. The storage box reverse side has the labeling for the fuse location. Get yourself a fuse tester or just guess and use one of the spare fuses stored in the fuse box area. My problem was the exact same and it was a blown fuse for the "STOP LIGHT" which is the brake/taillights. Towing a boat I managed to get the lights on the trailer wet and shorted them out. Viola! Changed the fuse and it not only started but I could actually shift. Has been fine ever since. I now keep a set of varied fuses of the correct mini size in my glove compartment. Good Luck and I hope this helps.--Linda

And, as on the Saturn, there are more than one. Go figure. Be sure to either find out why the fuses blew, or not do what you did, again. Glad you got it fixed.

Heaven forbid they make fue panels easily accessible. In my 95 Jetta I gotta sit in reverse in the drivers seat to check the fuses. Feet over the headrest and head close to the pedals. It would be very strange to see someone driving that way wouldn't it (better if on other side of highway).
