94 escort wagon won't run

Car has 34,000 miles and died while turning a corner.

Towed it home, checked for spark -OK and sprayed some starter fluid in intake hose and didn't try to start.

Friend suggested a bad timing belt. Is there an easy way to verify a bad belt?

Any other possibilities?

Remove oil filler cap. If you can see the cam/valves, check for roation/movement while cranking. Also an engine cranking over with a broken timing belt has a noticeably different sound - weeweeweeweeweewee.

Low mileage for a '94!

Also the engine in that puppy is an interferance engine if the belt went bad you will have 4 bad valves now a compression test will verify.
