Front differential

Howdy!

The front differential on my 95 Jetta was apparently damaged in an accident DEC. '06. The other day, it started whining upon deceleration. I took it to a local transmission shop for a free diagnosis. They told me about the differential eventually breaking apart and punching a hole into the automatic transmission casing. I was quoted $1800 for rebuliding it. The car has 225 k, front end damage and since I do not currently have that kind of money to spare fixing it is a moot point. I asked my VW specialist about it and they recommended getting another used transmission, at 5 hours labor at $85 per hour if everything goes well for installation. Found a used transmission for $800 at an auto recycling center, but that kind of cash is tied up right now (in other words owed to me, and borrower doesn't have the cash to pay me back now). So my question is what kind of a ballpark estimation of remainig time do I have on this since it isn't grinding yet before the differential grenades into the transmission. When I get the money, I will probably be buying a different vehicle. Sorry about the diharrea of the word processor. Thank you much for any input.

Decel whine is usually a bearing issue on the pinoin side depending on how you drive it and the number of miles a day ball park guess at best without hearing it MAYBE 2 months if its only doing it on decel but you will be chewing up bearings and sending little frags everywhere inside it all the way and when it goes you will be stuck there without a tow. I understand having money out there I'm in the same boat.
I'd recommend as little use as possible of the vehical till you can do something with it.

Normal use is 40 mile roundtrip to work, 90% highway. A friend of my roommate is a VW nut and might be able to help with another transmission. Why can't just the differential be replaced? A friend of mine will help with another vehicle or fixing this one supposedly. If it does die, it will be my first use of my AAA+ card. I don't really want to have to use it but it would be kind of nice to see a return on the $90 I paid for a year. Thank you much Manic!!
