van not starting

Hi. we have a 2002 GMC savana. It recently started having a delay when you turn the key to start. Like I would turn it and it would be 2 or 3 seconds then it would start. Only happened a few times in the past couple months. Then it would not start when you turned at all. Then you would turn key again and it would start. There is no turning over sound like it is trying to start, just a "click". Now we have to hook up the charger/starter to the battery , turn the key to first position, and wait till volts reach 14 before it will start. Please help. We dont know if it is the battery or something else and really don't have money for a mechanic right now so want to make sure we can find out what it is first. The battery in it is from 8/06 and is a 74 month battery. Don't want to buy a new one if we don't need to.

Initial impression is a starter going bad...The solenoid plunger is getting stuck in its bore.
